OPERATIONS ORDER: South and Southwest Pacific Areas
4 August 1942

Aircraft reconnaissance and information from
"Ferdinand",the Coastwatcher network, indicate
that the Japanese are building an airfield on
Guadalcanal. An enemy airfield at this location
would seriously threaten our positions on Espiritu
Santo and Efate.

You are to undertake Operation "Watchtower", the
invasion of Tulagi and the capture of the airfield on
Guadalcanal. The 1st Marine Division is available for
this operation.

In addition, the Japanese Army is developing a base at
Buna on the north coast of New Guinea. We believe
that their ultimate goal is to utilize Buna as a
staging base for the capture of Port Moresby via the
Kokoda Trail over the Owen Stanley mountain range.
They must be stopped at all costs.

Port Moresby is essential to Southwest Pacific
strategic plans. It is being developed as a major air
base, and its location is vital to the defence of
continental Australia. Port Moresby must be denied to
the enemy.
